Harley-Davidson XR750

You patriotic types may feel pretty gutted hearing this, but it seems we’ve our Euro friends to thank for the U.S. being graced with one of the most iconic motorcycles to ever be built. What constitutes an icon? Howz ‘bout the XR750? If that doesn’t say ‘Muhrica, nothing does.
Did the Euros get an XR? Yes and no. What they had built especially for them (but you already know this) was the Harley-Davidson Sportster XR1200. What you may not know is that, according to Bill Davidson, VP, Core Customer Marketing for Harley, is that our moto-loving broheims overseas allegedly have a greater passion for naked bikes, in particular, those influenced by American flat-track racing. Also, it seems that most of Europe likes our bikes, as opposed to one county in particular, over there.
The naked, or standard, means a lot to Europe, more than the U.S. market, if you can believe that. Want proof? Witness the apparent death of Kawasaki’s Z1000 in the U.S. after only one year’s worth of revision? In ’06, the first-gen Z1000 outsold all other sport brands and models combined in Europe according to Kawasaki. In the U.S. it was more or less a loss-leader, so it was dropped from American dealerships for ’09.
Regardless of the seeming disdain for practical, sensible, upright-but-sporty unfaired standards in the U.S., Harley heard the uproar in the Letters-to-the-Editor, chat rooms, forum feedback and straight-up complaints from U.S. riders after the XR1200 being a Europe-only model, and decided it was time to bring the XR1200 home!
It’s baffling that a bike so iconic to American motorcycling would be loved more elsewhere than its home. A prophet isn’t welcome in his own country…

A breathed-on Sportster motor gives the XR1200 extra grunt over the run-of-the-mill 1200cc Harley.

As you’ve likely read in the past several months, the XR’s mill is largely a 1200 Sporty, albeit with a few refinements. A couple of crucial updates include precision cooling of the cylinders via oil paths around the exhaust valves, and an airbox and exhaust system optimized for greater intake volume and better flo as well as serving as clear-cut styling links to Harley’s flat-track past (and present!), a higher compression ratio (10:1), and redline increased to 7,000 rpm. It’s all good for a claimed torque figure just shy of 74 ft-lbs at 4,000 rpm and an alleged 90 hp. The XR is down 10 hp to the average Buell XB model, for example, and it also gives up more than 150 pounds in claimed dry weight to the same bike(s).
Other changes that further delineate the XR from your average Sporty while drawing a blazingly obvious parallel to the historic XR750 is a new hollow cast-aluminum swingarm that is rumored to be upwards of 40% stiffer than the typical box-section steel Sportster swingarm, and steering geometry that employs a “split-rake” in order to achieve assertive steering input while at the same time allowing a more relaxed, upright rider triangle.
Additionally, the flat-track imitator rolls on lightweight 3-spoke cast wheels spooned with Dunlop Qualifiers developed specifically for the XR, and a meaty 43mm inverted fork. The fork is unadjustable but offers over five inches of travel. The dual coil-over shocks offer preload adjustment via the classic ramp-style adjuster, and, well, provide that “classic look.” And here’s where Harley got smart with the XR. The Motor Company called on 9-time AMA Grand National Champion and all-around nice guy, Scott Parker, to assist in chassis and handling development.

The dirt-track-inspired XR1200 acquits itself well in the corners.

The fork denies little if any deflection to upset the chassis and do an excellent job of keeping the front glued to the tarmac but, due to its lack of adjustments and race-guy influence, also doesn’t offer much compliance over potholes or sharp-angled bumps. For the XR’s reasonable retail figure that’s marginally more costly than, say, an XB12R, it should have adjustable preload, at a minimum. The Buell’s have fully-adjustable sticks, why not the XR, I say?
Regardless of a sometimes-jolting experience, the combination of quality rubber, lightened rolling inertia courtesy the wheels, 59-inch wheelbase and stout fork, the XR1200 turns in easily and stays on target all the way through your chosen corner arc with stability and confidence.
I noted a few other riders bemoaning some wallow in the chassis, but I experienced little of this. I say this not to brag but to lend credence to my handling notes; I was always running with the quickest of our group, scraping the long peg feelers or right-side exhaust, whichever came first. Speaking of exhaust, note where the inspiration for the performance-tuned headers and mufflers came from. That’s right, the championship-dominating XR750. Peg feelers can be removed for increased lean angle to the left, but I’d suggest leaving the right peg feeler on in order to prevent further scuffage to the exhaust or a highside incident, should you crank the bike over that far.

The XR1200 takes the naked sportbike in a distinctly Harley direction.

Ergonomically the XR1200 strikes a good compromise between aggressive canyon attacker and sensible, upright everyday ride. The reach from the saddle to the wide flat-track-inspired bars is easy, though the seat-to-peg relation may seem a little tight for those over, say, six feet tall. Nevertheless, what appears to be a diminutive and sparsely padded seat is actually a saddle that proved comfortable for well over 60 miles of freeway and surface street slogging.
Also, though clutch pull may make a man out of you at day’s end, the 5-speed tranny works well and shifts easily. And last but definitely not least, the brakes on this Harley-Davidson belie the name on the tank.

The XR1200 impresses for its poise, but it’s the inimitable dirt-track styling and heritage that makes it so desirable.

Never have I ridden a Harley that stops with such force while offering so much feel. H-D teamed up with Nissin again (the company makes calipers for the rest of the Sportster line) in order to come up with an all-new caliper. The dual four-piston pinchers squeeze a set of 292mm rotors with such force that I locked the grippy front Dunlop at one time. These brakes are nothing short of spectacular and should be grasped with caution should you take advantage of an XR1200 demo ride and are expecting the usual Harley brake. This brake set is on-par with the brake systems on any number of Japanese performance-oriented street motorcycles.
This newest Harley, in many ways, is without competition, as no other maker produces a bike similar on a mass scale. Yet, it’s not without a few niggles; a couple of bolts here and there could use hiding or a simple cover of some type, right side ground clearance is limited somewhat by the lower portion of the exhaust headers, and the front suspension should really be adjustable considering the bike’s $10,799 ($11,079 for Orange, and Pewter Denim) admission price. If you want one, the pre-order period ends on December 15, so you’d better hurry to get your hands on the 750 XRs available in 2009.
Still, looking beyond these issues, it’s hard to deny the visceral draw of the XR1200, especially if you like dirt-track racing (and you should!). To this point, Harley’s U.S. communications director, Paul James, noted that during the XR’s weekend-long U.S. unveiling in Long Beach, CA, recently, passions for the XR cut across lines, so to speak. James reports that riders of all brands, or no brand at all, were attracted to theXR1200. “I could see myself on this bike,” said the passers-by and admirers.
I certainly know I wanted to see myself aboard this machine so rich in inspiration and heritage, and I have to say, it was worth the wait.

2007 Lamborghini Murcielago

Lamborghini has released the first pictures and details of the facelifted Murcielago. It is called "LP640", which implied its 640 horsepower output. (Remark: note that this breaks the tradition of Lamborghini, in which the number following LP indicated engine capacity) The upgraded big Lambo has a heavily redesigned V12 displacing 6.5 liters (up from 6.2). New crankshaft, cylinder heads, camshafts, intake and exhaust means the engine is almost new. Horsepower increases from 580hp to 640hp at 8000 rpm, while max torque inches up from 479 to 487 lbft at 6000 rpm. With the new V12, LP640 can sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 3.3 seconds, or a reduction of 0.4 second. This is partly contributed by the addition of Ferrari-style electronic launch control.

Features

LP640 means Longitudinale Posteriore 640 hp, and it refers to the position and power of the V12 engine, that gains 60 hp on the previous Murcielago (from 580 to 640 hp at 8,000 rpm, while the torque grows from 479 lbs-ft to 469 lbs-ft at 6,000 rpm).

The technician in Sant’Agata Bolognese made new cylinder heads, a new crankshaft, new camshafts, a new exhaust sytem, with a single, gigantic and menacing central exhaust tube.

Top speed is now even higher than the 210h of the old Murcielago, while it accerates from 0-60 mph in 3.3 second (down from 3.8 seconds).

The body is almost entirely built in carbon fiber (except for steel door panels).

What can one say of the renewed styling ? It’s even more "monstruos", even more menacing. The message seen from the front is "move over", from the rear it’s "eat my exhaust".

Official prices haven’t been announced yet, but you can expect to pay some 23-3000$ over the original Lamborghini Murcielago’s pricetag.

Unmistakable Lamborghini Design

In their reinterpretation of the Lamborghini Murcielago LP640, the designers at the Lamborghini Style Centre have remained true to the traditional Lamborghini principles of purism, sport and function. The Murcielago LP640 now appears even more aggressive, with the new front and rear bumpers contributing significantly to its appearance. The exhaust system terminal has been incorporated in the diffuser on the rear bumper. Other innovations include the rear lights, which enhance the distinguishing features of the Murcielago LP640, making it unmistakable even at night.

The design of the sides is also worth mentioning: while the area behind the air intake on the right side is practically closed, the left side features a vast aperture for cooling the oil radiator. Together with the aerodynamically defined front and rear, this proves yet again that the shape of a Lamborghini is dictated by function.

More Powerful Engine

The engine of the new Murcielago LP640 has undergone outstanding and radical modification. The increased bore and longer stroke have boosted the displacement of the classic 60° V-engine from 6.2 liters to 6.5 liters. Thus the already extraordinary 580 bhp engine power has now been elevated to an impressive peak of 640 bhp at 8,000 rpm. The 12-cylinder engine reaches a maximum torque of 487 lb-ft at 6,000 rpm.

The new Murcielago LP640 features a modified sixratio gearbox as well as a tougher rear differential and new axle shafts. On request, the e-gear automatic gearbox is also available equipped with the new dedicated “Thrust” (acceleration programme) mode.

This “evolutionary leap forward” has been possible thanks to a coherent review of every engine component: the cylinder head and the entire intake system (based on the tried and tested Lamborghini variable geometry system), have been completely reworked. The crankshaft, camshafts and exhaust system have also undergone innovation.

The increase in power naturally determines an increase in performance. The maximum speed is now 340 km/h (before 330 km/h). The excellent performance of the Murciélago LP640 means it can now accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds (0.4 seconds faster than the previous model).

Lamborghini engineers have also concentrated on improving torque development. The “drivability” of the engine is enhanced by a continuous variable timing system (intake and exhaust side) and a drive-by-wire engine management system.

To meet the thermal requirements of the engine, the engineers have foreseen a considerably larger oil radiator and subsequently, the air intake on the left side of the vehicle has been enlarged. The liquid cooling system, characterised by the Lamborghini VACS system (variable geometry air inlet system) remains the same. Electronically managed air intakes open depending on the outdoor temperature and the need for cooling air, ensuring maximum aerodynamic efficiency.

----

Gearbox and transmission: improved efficiency and strength

More power and higher torque call for superior gearbox component performance. To meet these new demands, the new Murciélago LP640 features a modified six-ratio gearbox as well as a tougher rear differential and new axle shafts. On request, the e-gear automatic gearbox is also available equipped with the new dedicated “Thrust” (acceleration programme) mode.

Just like its predecessors, the Murciélago LP640 features permanent four-wheel drive, based on the reliable Lamborghini VT (Viscous Traction) system. The system is self-governing and does not feature any electronic controls. The drive force is usually divided between the front and rear axles in the ratio of 30 to 70. An independent control circuit adjusts the distribution of the drive force depending on dynamic oscillation, weight distribution and the relative friction factor in perfect synchronisation with the Visco clutch. In extreme cases, up to 100% of the drive force can be applied to a single axle.

Electronics: a "closed loop" for total control

The electronics have also been updated. The modified engine control units improve engine performance and “driveability” thanks to “closed loop” control.

Every engine and vehicle parameter is managed and controlled by three “master” control units and a “satellite” control unit. The master control units consist of two Lamborghini "LIE" engine control units, a Lamborghini “GFA” (Auxiliary Function Management) control unit and a Lamborghini “PMC” (Power Motor Control) satellite control unit. The control units are interconnected by a CAN Bus line.

Frame and Chassis: Perfect Harmony

The body of the Murcielago LP640 with its characteristic scissor doors is created from the prized union of sheet steel and honeycombed carbon fiber, glued and riveted together.

Driving, handling and stability at high speed are enhanced by new springs and stabilizers, as well as by a redesigned electronically controlled damper. The "antidive" and "anti-squat" features on the axles, which efficiently prevent so-called "brake diving" and "squatting", have not been changed. The two springs on every rear wheel, the single spring on every front wheel and the damper are placed coaxially.

Optional Ceramic Carbon Brakes

The dual hydraulic circuit brake system equipped with a vacuum brake booster ensures considerable deceleration values. The self-ventilating front and rear brake disks measure 380 mm x 34 mm and 355 mm x 32 mm respectively. The control circuit of the four-channel anti-blocking system (ABS) with electronic brake control (DRP) and traction control (TCS) features a new characteristic curve. The system consists in an electro-hydraulic control unit and four speed sensors.

When particularly high braking performance is required, it is possible to equip the vehicle with 380 mm x 36 mm ceramic carbon brakes featuring six-piston brake calipers.

The new Murciélago LP640 also meets with even the most rigorous safety requirements. Thanks to the two front airbags (a 60-litre single stage air bag on the driver side and a 130-litre two stage airbag on the passenger side), the Murciélago LP640 complies with every international law in effect in terms of head-on and side crashes, impacts against posts, occupant safety, fuel supply integrity and flammability of materials. The luggage compartment also complies with childproof safety regulations.

Even More Exclusive Interior

The seats in the cockpit have undergone the most radical changes; more spacious and equipped with redesigned head restraints, the seats now ensure better comfort. The leather upholstery features lozenge-shaped stitching called "Q-citura". The same design is recaptured on the upholstery on the door panels, the panel between the seats and the engine compartment, and on the roof panel.

A new instrument panel has been developed with lights featuring a new graphic design, flanked by a new Kenwood car radio with a 6.5” widescreen monitor and DVD, MP3 and WMA player. An optional navigation system is also available (standard in Japan).

Like its predecessors, the new Murciélago LP640 can be customised thanks to the special fittings and upholstery packages. For the first time, the renowned characteristic Murciélago Roadster asymmetric and driver-oriented fittings and upholstery are available for the Coupé, featuring a perforated leather driver’s seat and door panel.

Thanks to the "Privilegio" customisation program, any Murciélago LP640 can be transformed into a customised sports car. For example, the cockpit can be enhanced with an extremely refined carbon finish applied to the air conditioning control panel, the control lever console and the parking brake.

Bugatti Veyron - "World’s Fastest Sports Car"

Auto Motor und Sport recently took on an exercise to determine which car among a variety of exotic sports models was the fastest of them all. On the track were Aston Martin Vanquish S, Bugatti Veyron, Chevrolet Corvette Z06, Dodge Viper SRT-10, Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano, Ford GT, Lamborghini Murcielago LP640, Mercedes SLR McLaren, and Porsche 911 Turbo.

The Bugatti Veyron came out on top with an almost unbelievable 249.7 mph. Second fastest was the Lamborghini at 211.2 mph and third came the Ferrari, recording 208.1 mph.

The Veyron’s zero to 60 mph time was under three seconds, which was just as amazing as the car’s top speed.

2010 Chevrolet Equinox AWD 2LT

The Chevrolet Equinox is the car that ushered in the era of the utilitarian Crossover at General Motors, so it is only appropriate that the new model come equipped with certain features that make for a very functional automobile with standard features like a 6 speed automatic transmission, direct injected gasoline engines, XM satellite radio, an iPod input jack, power everything and OnStar roadside assistance. However there is more to the crossover segment than reliability, these are the cars that will take families down the street to soccer practice and across the country to Disney World, so they need to be comfortable, attractive and engaging; especially for the back seat passengers.

Our well equipped 2010 Chevrolet Equinox AWD 2LT also came with some of the more desirable features being offered by GM, like the back up camera with park assist, power tailgate, Vehicle Interface Package that includes Bluetooth, the Chrome Exterior Appearance Package to dress up the outside, the Cargo Management Package that makes storage a snap in the back of the truck and the Rear Seat Entertainment System that includes some of the best designed backrest monitors on any new car today. However our personal favorite was the 18 inch machined aluminum wheels, Chevrolet offers rims as big as 19 inches in diameter, but we didn’t want to be too flashy. Of course, because we are Top Speed, Chevy made sure we tested the 3.0 Liter direct injected V6 that makes 264 HP and 222 lb-ft of torque version that is still able to get 17 MPG in the city and 24 MPG on the highway.

Initial thoughts: Jaguar XF-R

initial thoughts jaguar xf-r

Jay Leno isn’t the only one lucky enough to get behind the wheel of the 510 HP Jaguar XF-R, thanks to our local Jaguar fleet service Top Speed has just received a brand new Indigo Blue version of the now Indian automaker’s high performance four door. The crown jewel of the XF-R is the new 5.0 Liter supercharged V8 that makes over 500 ground pounding horses and takes the XF from 0 to 60 MPH in as little as 4.7 seconds and can complete the standing quarter mile in just over 13.0 seconds.

The XF-R sets itself apart from lesser XF models thanks to Jaguar’s aero performance design that includes a new lower hanging front bumper with a larger mesh grille and functional cutouts in the hood to allow a little hot air to vent. The sides of the car sit lower to the ground thanks to a set of restyled side skirts and out back the XF-R receives a subtle trunk mounted spoiler to go along with the distinctive R badge. One of the nicest touches included by the Jaguar design team are the 20 inch Nevis alloy wheels that clearly spell out that this XF is something special.

On the inside our XF-R is a step up from the standard model. There is the same familiar wood grain, but this time the seats are much more bolstered and are covered in a combination of London Tan and Charcoal leather that makes a set of seats that are as nice to look at as they are to sit in. Jaguar has kept the familiar dial style gear selector, but we have a hard time imagining it in any other setting aside from Sport. If you have ever been inside of an XF you know just how plush and luxurious the cabin can be, the XF-R takes it a step further and adds in a little taste of sport.

In true English fashion, all the extra performance of the XF-R comes in an understated package. The XFR distinguishes itself with larger air intakes, a couple small hood louvers, and a few new chrome bits. This restrained look may do well for the classic English automobile; at a price of only $80,000 this Jaguar XF-R makes strong competition for four door super cars like the
